VOLUNTEERING

Volunteer walkingThank you for your interest in volunteering at the Guelph Humane Society.  We greatly value the work of our volunteers, and we welcome new volunteers throughout the year to help Guelph's Animals.

It takes a village to keep everything at our shelter running smoothly! The shelter has various volunteer positions available ranging from socializing the animals to fundraising or helping in our gardens. Each of these positions is important as all work ultimately benefits the animals.

Interesting in working with the animals at the shelter?  Consider the following volunteer opportunities that directly involve working with the various animals at GHS:

 
Program
Description
Qualifications
Dog Walking/Kennel Crew
Walking GHS dogs in all kinds of weather, assisting with kennel cleaning, laundering bedding, feeding, etc.
Must attend a Dog Orientation Training Session.
Feline Friend
Socializing and grooming cats.  Cleaning of litter boxes, food and water dishes and upkeep of cat adoption room.
Must attend a Cat/General Orientation Training Session.
Small Animal Pal
Cleaning cages, water and food dishes and socializing hamsters, rats, rabbits, Guinea Pigs, etc.
Must attend a General Orientation Training Session.
Fostering
Providing short term care in your home to help animals become adoptable.  NOTE: Foster volunteers are required to complete a separate application form.
Owned pets must be sterilized and up to date on vaccinations.  Previous experience in fostering animals would be an asset.

Cat Volunteering

THERE IS AN ENDLESS NEED FOR YOUR HELP HERE!

Basic Requirements to Volunteer:
-Volunteers must be able to commit to a minimum term of one year and a minimum of 10 hours per month
-Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age to work alone.  If under the age of 16, volunteers must be supervised at all times by a parent or guardian and commit to a minimum of 5 hours per month.


If you are too young to volunteer on your own or want to help motivate other volunteers,  consider the following two opportunities:

Small animal pal, feline friend or dog walker
Must be accompanied by a parent/guardian
Volunteer Leader
Assist in training new volunteers for a variety of positions.
Must be a reliable, outgoing and knowledgeable about the volunteer program and opportunities available.

Interested in other ways of helping out at the shelter?  Consider the following volunteer opportunities:

Qualifications
Yard Work/Gardening
Seasonal maintenance around the Shelter property i.e.: snow shoveling, raking leaves, planting flowers, etc.
A love for being outdoors!
Special Events
Helping on the day of the event for a specific assigned shift or duty.  Also, help with event planning.
Must be reliable and enjoy working with the public.
Fundraising
Marketing and fundraising for special events, clerical and phone assistance, set up and take down on day of event, securing donations and/or auction items.
Enjoy planning and preparation of projects, good leadership skills, enjoy workin with public.
Shelter Host/ Administration
Cleaning and upkeep of front reception area, direct people through the shelter , put away donations, filing, paperwork, computer work and other various office duties, etc.
Excellent customer service skills, organization skills and computer experience.

Once you have filled out the application, please attach a reference letter and hand in the application in person to the Guelph Humane Society. The reference letter can be either a personal or professional reference from someone you have known for more than one year.

Once your application has been reviewed, you will be contacted either by phone or e-mail to attend an orientation session.
