DUKE'S FUND RECIPIENTS
In the fall of 1995 Duke's Fund was
established to provide specialized veterinary care for the shelter
animals in need. The fund's namesake, 6-year-old Duke had been
surrendered to the shelter suffering from a chronic respiratory problem
that made it difficult for him to breathe. In order to alleviate
this condition and adopt him into a new home a costly surgical
procedure was necessary.
Although Duke's story
had a happy ending, the Society must care for almost 4000 animals per
year and many like Duke with special needs. Without the funds to
provide the necessary care, euthanasia would be the only
alternative. The following are recent animals that Duke's Fund
has allowed us to help:
McCabe

McCabe came into the shelter as a
surrendered animal from an investigation. When McCabe came to us
he had virtually no hair on the lower end of his body, was severely
infested with fleas, had ear and eye concerns, and his skin was
extremely inflamed with sores all over his body. It would be an
understatement to say that this sweet boy was in bad shape. With
frequent veterinary check-up, long-term medications, and the TLC from
our dog care staff, McCabe has made a full recovery. To see him
today you would never know the hardships that McCabe faced when he came
to us at the shelter. We are happy to report that McCabe has been
adopted to a wonderful family and is a very happy boy.

Diesel

Diesel came into the
shelter as a surrendered animal. he had broken his leg after
getting tangled in his leash. Diesel was rushed to a veterinary
clinic by Animal Services where he underwent surgery to repair the
break and would later go into foster care during his recovery.
Diesel was later adopted by his foster family and has made a complete
recovery from his injuries.
Sadie
Sadie was an 8 month
old wiggly boxer pup who was surrendered to the Guelph Humane Society
because her family didn't have the funds to repair a fractured back
leg, but wanted the best care for her. As a young and active
puppy Sadie needed to have her leg plated to repair the fracture and
give her a working leg, which meant a special surgeon for the procedure
which thankfully was a success. Sadie also needed to be treated
for a skin condition called demodectic mange sometimes seen in young
dogs that will resolve with treatment. These two health issues,
combined with her spay, meant that Sadie's total veterinary cost far
exceeded her adoption fee.
Sadie is a fun, loving
boxer pup who loves everyone she meeets and greets with her
outrageously wiggly hind end. Without the generous donations
provided through Duke's Fund dogs like Sadie wouldn't have the chance
to find a forever home and run like the wind again. Sadie
was adopted in November 2010 with a full recovery to her hind leg.
Your
generous donations will help us to continue to provide a second chance
for animals like Duke. For more information regarding donating to
