The Guelph Humane Society is renewing its efforts to find a new home.

500 Wellington Street West, home of the GHS shelter for forty-five years, is city-owned land shared with Guelph’s wastewater treatment plant. Wastewater infrastructure is scheduled to expand in the near future to address Guelph’s growing population. This includes reclaiming the shelter’s current building.

In summer 2015, after an exhaustive two-year search and a wide scoping review of available properties by a panel of local experts and Guelph Humane Society representatives, the GHS purchased a property with plans to renovate for a new shelter. After significant work by our construction planning team on the renovation, unforeseen building constraints and challenges were encountered, leading to the conclusion that the site was not the best choice for GHS’s purposes.

“The GHS continues to actively investigate new properties on the market, as well as some that are not currently listed for sale,” says Lisa Veit, Acting Executive Director of the Guelph Humane Society. “The City of Guelph, owner of our current location, has been supportive and very cooperative in helping us to meet our goal.”

An ideal site for the future shelter would:
• improve the visibility of the shelter,
• be close to public transit,
• have proximity to green space for dog walking,
• be within the city limits,
• accommodate existing operations,
• allow modernization and innovation of animal care needs,
• permit future expansions to programming.

The Guelph Humane Society has been caring for animals in need for over a century. “We are at another crossroads in our history where the support of our community is critical to our success. We invite you, our supporters, friends, and our community, to dream with us and to contribute whatever you can in our mission to innovate animal care for another century,” says Shane Bateman, Chair of the Board of Directors.
